OUR CHEF
Rick and Kathy Hatanpaa moved from Minnesota to Great Falls, Montana in 2011. The couple worked for the Department of Defense at Malmstrom Air Force Base as contract and account managers.
​
They discovered the beauty of the Little Belts and purchased the old Cub’s Den from the bank in early 2015. The Hatanpaa’s found their passion in updating and re-opening this wonderful destination place for locals and world travelers alike so all could experience this amazing area. After months of hard work and many updates to the motel, restaurant, and convenience store, they re-opened in July 2015.

Sadly, their dream changed when Kathy was diagnosed with ALS in the fall of 2017. Kathy passed away in June 2019. Kathy was a radiant light, always with her arms open and a smile on her face for everyone. Rick and her son Zach have continued to improve the business and keep her spirit alive in their dedicated ongoing service for all guests.

Today, we cater to our clients and our tomorrows and Doug's wonderful food. Let's celebrate by always being our best always and treating each other with kindness and love.

Born in Southern California and raised in Las Vegas, Douglas traveled and worked throughout the United States from Florida to Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Yosemite National Park and Crater Lake National Park before arriving here.
​
His love affair with Montana began several years ago while on vacation and it has been calling him back since. So when the opportunity to work with Rick Hatanpaa at Cougar Canyon in the Lewis & Clark National Forest his Montana dream came true.
Now comes the really exciting part! With his extensive culinary background working with great chefs in world class hotels and restaurants, we can bring this to your table, for your own Cougar Canyon dining experience.
